The history of Qatar ranges from the first human occupation of the area to its formation as a modern state. The occupation of Qatar dates back 50,000 years and Stone Age encampments and artifacts have been found on the peninsula. Mesopotamia was the first civilization to have a presence in the area during the Neolithic, highlighted by the discovery of terracotta fragments originating from the Ubaid period near the coastal encampments.
