It is assumed that Cuneo hosted a colony of Milanese refugees, in the days when the city of Sant’Ambrogio suffered the ire of Frederick I, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (known as Federico Barbarossa), when the great city was destroyed and the relics , at the time very famous, the Magi were moved to the distant city of Cologne, on the banks of the Rhine.
The historical documentation begins at the end of 1.100; in 1198 Cuneo established itself as a free municipality: a village free from marquis interference, a pole of attraction for the neighboring populations, subject to the feudal constraints typical of the time.
