Polynesia is one of the regions into which Oceania is traditionally divided and is roughly included in a triangle between New Zealand, Easter Island and the Hawaiian Islands. To this traditional division of Oceania also used by the United Nations to divide the world into macro-regions, researchers prefer the modern division into only two regions: neighboring Oceania and distant Oceania of which Polynesia is part. The Polynesian peoples have a sturdy and slightly curvy build that was selected at the time of the great sea voyages, due to the frequent possibility of being left without food and without water.
